The desk often seems to act as the catch-all in a home- holding everything from office supplies, to papers and bills, to kitchy trinkets that seem to find their home on the desk. If you are anything like us, it is difficult to work in a cluttered space, and nothing gets us more in the working groove than pretty desk accessories and an organized tabletop.
Here are some tips for de-cluttering that space and making for a more enjoyable work environment.
// Throw things away. I know it sounds intuitive- but many of us hold on to announcements, receipts, ads, and old bills thinking- “maybe I”ll need this”. The truth? You rarely need it. And if you do- there is this wonderful thing called the world wide internet that most likely has the information you need. Go through your papers once a month and get rid of things that aren’t urgent- that will dramatically decrease the clutter.
//Buy pretty office supplies. Nothing is more irritating than the site of stacks of manila envelopes. March down to your local office supply store and invest in cute supplies. Yes, they may cost a bit more- but they are well worth it. Reverse psychology shows us that pretty things elicit a desire to have a cleaner, prettier space. You’ll be less likely to leave a big pile of folders on your desk if they are pretty.
// Invest in closed storage. Not all desks have space to store unsightly odds-and-ends, so invest in stylish boxes or storage units to hide the clutter. Stack a few colorful or patterned boxes on top of your desk to store the likes of pens and paperclips and you’ll dramatically reduce the table-top clutter and mess.
